Yankee sleight of hand: Derek deke? Jeter cheater?

Derek Jeter(notes) has a bit part in a box-office hit, cowboy boots and he’s putting those acting skills to good use. The New York Yankees captain, with a cameo in the Will Ferrell comedy “The Other Guys,” gave an Oscar-worthy performance by pretending to get hit by a pitch in a pennant race game Wednesday night. Howling, hopping and hurting—seemingly, anyway—Jeter even got the team trainer to examine his left arm. And then the All-Star often hailed as a model of good sportsmanship took his base. More like stole it, fans in Tampa Bay hollered. “Jeter cheater!” they chanted. Replays clearly showed what really happened: Chad UGG Elsey wedge BootsQualls’(notes) fastball squarely struck the knob of Jeter’s bat, not him. But Major League Baseball doesn’t use instant replay in these situations. For more than a century, ballplayers have tried to bend the rules. Pitchers throw spitballs, outfielders fake catches on balls that bounce, shortstops make phantom tags. This isn’t golf, where players are expected to call penalties on themselves. Coming off the Steroids Era, where cheating often meant illegal performance-enhancing drugs, some actually found a charm in Jeter’s old-fashioned chicanery. Yet seeing the squeaky-clean Jeter involved in Kids Classic Tall Boots Yankee hanky-panky was startling. So was his response. Asked where the ball hit, he readily admitted his sleight of hand. “The bat,” he said, without apology. “It’s part of the game.” To his legion of admirers, Derek’s deke was a savvy play. The bat flew, he spun around, doubled over and convinced the home-plate umpire he’d been plunked. He wound up scoring a key run in the seventh inning. To Jeter’s detractors, it was a cheap trick. Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon argued so much he got ejected, though he praised Jeter after the Rays rallied past the Yankees 4-3 into first place in the AL East. “There’s several thespians throughout baseball,” Maddon said. “I thought Derek did a great job, and I applaud it, because I wish our guys would do the same thing.” Both the Yankees and Rays were off Thursday, UGG Coquette Slipper but Jeter Theater played throughout the majors. On the Cincinnati Reds’ telecast of their game against Arizona—a matchup with no direct connection to what occurred at Tropicana Field—there was a fan text poll with this question: Are you OK with the Derek Jeter play? Fans were split on whether it was gamesmanship or farce. Dodgers manager Joe Torre applauded Jeter. “Hell, yeah, he did the right thing,” Torre, Jeter’s longtime manager with the Yankees, said in San Francisco. “It’s not like running a red light. Stuff you can do out on the field, whether you can get away with it, it’s not being immoral. We allow people to steal second base. Anything you can get away with is fine. To me, that’s above board. It’s not like he’s loading his bat.” Batters often try to pretend they’ve been hit by pitches that just miss; it’s something they’re taught to do. But it usually takes them a split-second to start acting, and that rarely tricks the umps. Jeter, however, got right in character, especially after the ball hit the bat and sent vibrations up his arm. He fooled home-plate umpire Lance Barksdale, then managed to sneak a peek to watch Maddon’s dispute. “What can you do? My job is to get on UGG Amelie Sandals base. He said it hit me, so I’m not going to argue with him,” Jeter said. Jeter’s impeccable reputation for fairness and honesty might have helped him sell the call. Next time, pleading his case might not be so easy. A former World Series MVP, the 36-year-old Jeter currently is stuck in one of the worst slumps of his career. With his team trailing by a run, he would take anything. “I’ve been hit before when they said it hit the bat. It goes both ways,” he said. While the four umpires huddled to discuss the call, Maddon was certain the ball had nicked Jeter’s bat and rolled out near the pitcher’s mound. Maddon told Qualls to retrieve the ball and throw to first UGG Handbags base, to get Jeter out. No chance. “Nobody could tell me that the ball hit his hand, in any way, shape or form, or his wrist. But everybody could tell me that the ball hit the bat,” Maddon said. “I really hoped the play would be reversed based on pure, pure logic.” No luck there, either. “Basically it hit the knob and it was a fair ball, and work boots he was out at first. That’s all there is to it,” Qualls said. “He’s Derek Jeter, but you know what? It’s still the game of baseball and he was out, and that’s the play that should have been called.”

Wenger warns Arsenal not to underestimate Braga

Arsene Wenger insists Arsenal must not take victory for granted when uggs outlet they face unfashionable Portuguese club Braga in their opening Champions League group match on Wednesday. Wenger's side have made an impressive unbeaten start to their Premier League campaign and sit second in the table after thrashing Bolton 4-1 at the weekend. The Gunners have been given a favourable draw for the opening stage of Europe's elite club competition, with Braga, Shakhtar Donetsk and Partizan Belgrade their opposition in Group H. But Arsenal boss Wenger is well aware those positive domestic performances could cause his players to take more success for granted against a Braga team containing few star names. That kind of complacency has cost Arsenal in the Lo Pro Button boots past and Wenger has no intention of letting his team rest on their laurels ahead of the Emirates Stadium clash. Wenger is right to be wary of Braga, as they finished second in the Portuguese league last season - shattering the traditional dominance of the likes of Porto and Sporting Lisbon on the top spots - and then eliminated Celtic and Sevilla in the Champions League qualifying rounds. "For us a win on Wednesday is vital because I believe the group is much more difficult than people expect it to be," Wenger said. "Braga finished in front of Porto last year. We played against Porto and know they are a good side. Also, they have just kicked Sevilla out in the play-offs. "Shakhtar Donetsk are one of the best European Elsey wedge Boots sides, that is why I believe it is very important we start well at home." Wenger hopes to have Belgium defender Thomas Vermaelen available for selection on Wednesday after an Achilles problem ruled him out of the Bolton match. In Vermaelen's absence, French centre-half Sebastien Squillaci made a composed debut following his move from Sevilla. Wenger could also take heart from the way captain Cesc Fabregas struck up an immediate understanding with Morocco forward Marouane Chamakh. With Dutch forward Robin van Persie, England UGG Kids Classic Tall Boots winger Theo Walcott and Denmark striker Nicklas Bendtner all sidelined for several weeks, Wenger knows his creative lynchpin and leading targetman must function well together if Arsenal are to maintain their flying start. Chamakh scored on his home Premier League debut in the 6-0 win over Blackpool, then struck against Bolton from a Fabregas cross and Wenger believes the former Bordeaux player's style is suited to both the English game and European competition. "Chamakh will adapt well because he is a player who, no matter what game you play, likes to connect with players on the pitch," Wenger said. If they flourish, Domingos Paciencia's Braga, who will be savouring their first ever taste of the Champions League group stage, look unlikely to deliver an early blow to Wenger's bid to win the competition Coquette Slipper for the first time. Arsenal lost the 2006 final to Barcelona and were beaten in the quarter-finals by the same opposition last year. Asked whether he suffers sleepless nights about not wining the tournament, Wenger said: "Certainly, you always do a little bit. It goes through your head like if you have something important to do tomorrow. "But we will try to get that right. You want to do well for people who love the club. For the players, for the fans who love the club.'It goes through your head the day before a game and the day after a game. "We have a good mixture of quality and Amelie Sandals more experience. You know when you see our team play that they are not any more tender. We are equipped to win the Champions League."

Independiente and Quilmes have only three points, and Argentinos and Gimnasia are worse off with only two. In Brazil, Botafogo capitalized on losses by leaders Fluminense and Corinthians to move into third place Sunday with a 2-0 victory over Sao Paulo. On Saturday, Fluminense allowed an injury-time goal in a 2-1 loss to Atletico Goianiense in Goiania, its second loss in three matches. Former Corinthians midfielder Douglas scored the winner with a shot from the top of the area in the 34th to give Gremio its first away victory and extend its unbeaten streak to five matches. Rooney set for rough Premiership ride at Everton

LONDON (AFP) - Wayne Rooney will face the most hostile reception of his cheap boots career when the under-fire Manchester United striker makes his latest return to Everton on Saturday. It is safe to say a trip to his native Merseyside is the last thing Rooney needs after newspaper allegations that he paid two prostitutes for sex while his Liverpool-born wife Coleen was pregnant with the couple's first child. Reports that Coleen has refused to listen to Rooney's side of the story have been seen as a sign he faces a fight to save his marriage, but he didn't seem fazed as he scored for England against Switzerland on Tuesday. It may have helped that Rooney suffered UGG Lo Pro Button boots little or no negative reaction from a sedate crowd in Basel. However, a far more vitriolic atmosphere lies in wait at Goodison Park. If United boss Sir Alex Ferguson decides Rooney is in the right frame of mind to start, he will be exposing the former Everton star to 90 minutes of constant abuse from fans still bitter over their former idol's move to Old Trafford in 2004. Banners reading "Once a blue, now a red, in our hearts you are dead" greeted Rooney on previous visits to Goodison, but that will be mild compared to the reception this time, according to Everton defender Phil Jagielka. "He normally gets quite a bit of stick and I can't see that changing on Saturday," Jagielka said. "It should be amusing but I hope no UGG Elsey wedge Boots one crosses the line because we are all human beings. Sometimes football takes over and you never know what is going to happen." While Rooney and United steel themselves to face Everton, champions Chelsea will expect to extend their perfect start to the season when they travel to West Ham, who sit bottom of the table after three successive defeats. Carlo Ancelotti's side sit top of the table after three victories, including two 6-0 routs of West Brom and Wigan. Yet Ancelotti, who plans a long stay at Stamford Bridge, still wants more from his players and he said: "In football there are a lot of things, a lot of details that you can always improve. Every experience can give you the possibility to improve. "My desire is to be here for 25 years. I don't UGG Kids Classic Tall Boots know if it's possible, but I hope to stay for a long time." Arsenal's hopes of keeping pace with Chelsea suffered a double blow over the last seven days when Robin van Persie and Theo Walcott were both sidelined for several weeks with ankle injuries. Losing two match-winners of that quality will heap pressure on captain Cesc Fabregas to recapture the magnificent form he showed for much of last season, starting against Bolton at the Emirates Stadium this weekend. Arsenal's north London rivals Tottenham were UGG Coquette Slipper also hit by injury problems during the international break as England duo Jermain Defoe and Michael Dawson were ruled out for up to two months each. With Defoe out, Peter Crouch will return from a back injury when Harry Redknapp's team travel to West Brom, while Dutch midfielder Rafael van der Vaart could be on the Tottenham bench after his move from Real Madrid. Six of Manchester City's players starred in England's two Euro 2012 qualifying wins and winger James Milner hopes the feel-good factor will carry over to Eastlands when Roberto Mancini's side face Blackburn. "Most teams who win the title have an UGG Amelie Sandals English core, so it can only be good for us," Milner said. Gerard Houllier will take charge of his first Aston Villa match on Monday when the former Liverpool and Lyon manager's new team travel to Stoke. It promises to be a demanding opener for Houllier, but Stoke boss Tony Pulis believes his counterpart has inherited a fine squad that should flourish in the long-run. "I think he is walking into a football club which has boots melbourne top players and he has been very fortunate to get a great club," Pulis said.

Williams left carrying American hopes at U.S. Open

NEW YORK, Sept 7 (Reuters) - Venus Williams work boots kept the American flag fluttering at the U.S. Open on Tuesday when she beat French Open champion Francesca Schiavone 7-6 6-4 to become the first player through to the semi-finals. Williams, promoted to third seed this year after her sister and world number one Serena withdrew with an injury, provided a dazzling display that matched her sparkling pink dress to reach the last four for the eighth time in 12 years at New York. It has been nine years since she won her second successive title at Flushing Meadows but her form over the past nine days has given rise to the belief that a third crown could be on the horizon. Her win came immediately after the host-nation’s already slim prospects of winning the men’s title were extinguished when Sam Querrey lost a centre court thriller to Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka. The pair slugged it out for almost four and a half snow boots hours, putting the match programme hours behind, before Wawrinka, who upset Britain’s Andy Murray in the third round, prevailed 7-6 6-7 7-5 4-6 6-4. “I left it all out there today and I didn’t get to the quarters,” said an exhausted and deflated Querrey. “I’m bummed, but I did everything I could.” Wawrinka’s next opponent is Russian 12th seed Mikhail Youzhny, who slipped quietly through his section of the draw. He earned his place in the last eight with a convincing 7-5 6-2 4-6 6-4 win over Tommy Robredo, one of five Spanish men left in the top half of the draw. The remaining four, headed by Rafa Nadal, are western boots all in the same quarter, ensuring Spain will be represented in the men’s semi-finals on Saturday. Defending women’s champion Kim Clijsters was due to play Australia’s Samantha Stosur in the first of the two feature night matches at Arthur Ashe Stadium before Nadal squared off with countryman Feliciano Lopez. Schiavone, who became the first Italian woman to win a grand slam singles title when she won at Paris in June, could not match the power of Williams but provided the former world number one with some awkward moments by mixing up her game in the windy conditions. She came from 4-2 down to force a first set tiebreak then twice came from behind in the second set to get back to 5-4 when her serve let her down and Williams broke to wrap it up in straight sets. “She played a great match,” Williams said in a courtside sheepskin boots interview. “It’s not easy to play in these conditions, it’s hard to know what decisions to make, but she played excellent.”
